Malaysia to launch air ambulance service

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) — Malaysia is expected to launch air ambulance service later this year, the newspaper The Star said on Wednesday.
The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department said that it would setup an air ambulance unit this year and 20 people had been sent to the United States for training before doing practices at local hospitals.
The department currently had six helicopters and it hoped that it could obtain two more this year as it was launching the service nationwide.
The department also hoped to train more than 600 paramedic officers in the next two years.

It sounds hightech and signs of a developed country that Malaysia is set to be by 2020. But I was wondering whether it really needs Air Ambulances. I have heard of those successfull Flying Doctors of Australia, reaching out to dersert reigons of Australia. Well perhaps the country does need some, but I would be cautious to have too many, cos they aren’t really required. malaysia is a small nation and well connected to almost every part with excellent road  infrastructure. On emergency notices, well trained speeding ambulances can make it to destiantions to and forth hospitals in no time.
Perhaps the country should spend more in aquiring specialised ALS training.

  1. It is not the distance my good sir,it is the Urgent occassions where you have to take a petient to hospital as soon as possible. You can spend three hours on “very good infrastructural roads”,while I travel with my Air crew for only five minutes. Please think a bit broadly, especially when people’s lives are concerned.

  2. I agree with you ‘Nut Cracker’
But I was merely commenting of having more than required.
Indeed in cases where massive transfusions are required, every minute counts to get to the availability of blood pints.
Yet, do not take of my understanding to be that of a critic, in fact this news has been received on a very positive tone with me.
I only put in the cautionary note of directing proper funds equitably in the health system, where I stressed upon having more centers equipped with ALS and EMS services and more personnels trained in this, cause at the moment it has deficiencies which need to be looked on as well.

  3. Hi..

I am a helicopter paramedic from the UK… We have trauma doctors on board and we run with a Doctor/Paramedic team which takes the hospital Accident & Emergency department to the patient. This is proving very successful in the uk and is proved to be saving lives! I would be interested in the opportunities in Malaysia…

  4. Hi Tom, I am not sure how to guide you here.
Try contacting Dr Chew, He is a lecturer and an Emergency specialist at University Sains Malaysia.
    His email address is cksheng74@yahoo.com

  5. Hi Dr Zhivago, can you guide me to the people who is trying to launch the air ambulance service in Malaysia. We are an aviation company in Singapore who are trying to provide aicrafts for such services.

  6. Oops, sorry as I said, I am not connected to this ambulance service.
Perhaps you may try contacting the Malaysian Ministry of Health directly. They are the ones responsible for this service if it were to avail government hospitals.
I think the Petronas Hospital may surely have one.

  8. hi!
i’m actually not very familiar with medicine that i am an engineering student. i found this blog when looking into ECG that i am interested in further my study in biomedical engineering. i found this blog is very interesting beside chedat. congratulation…..!!!!!!
    well, here are my comment:
Malaysia is reaching to its next step in becoming one of the world known country.8 helicopters to be distributed nation wide is sufficient enough especially for those in sabah, sarawak and busy states like KL, JB and Penang.i don’t think it is more than enough while country like Malaysia is actually have high number of road accident, patient from country that need urgent medical treatment, a lot of professional will be born…….singapore have so why not we. there are many good side of launching many more as long as the government still have their budget on other field especially education.

hope i’m not off the road…….just feeling wanna write something instead of just read all the comments. just curious, are u malaysian?

  9. It is high time for Malaysia to have the dedicated Air ambulance services operated by Malaysian. We do not rely on others to provide the services. We do believe many aviation experiance company in Malaysia could do this. The know the culture and experiance on it. Believe me it works either operated by government or private sector. Live is more valuable than money when times come. The insurance only provides you the medical and hospital benefit if you could reach to hospital by yourself. The ground ambulance is not gurantee you the effective time that you need at present traffic situation. Private company such as Oxysky Aviation has gear up to provide the services very soon with 3 Agusta 109 and Lear 45, awaiting the operational documentation from DCA expacted by end of June 2009.

  10. Actual Real Air Ambulance services are already in Malaysia.
